Browser calling vs desk phones for a small fleet

An honest comparison for transport offices deciding between a traditional desk phone system and browser-based calling.

If you run a small transport office, you have probably been quoted for desk phones and a PBX box. Browser-based calling is a different approach. Here is a fair comparison, including where desk phones still win.

Where browser calling wins

  • No hardware. Your team uses the computers and phones they already have.
  • Drivers are included. A desk phone cannot go on the road; a phone browser can.
  • Video and screen share. Walk through a route plan or invoice on the same call.
  • Fast setup. New staff join in minutes.

Where desk phones still win

  • Outside calls today. A desk phone system connects to a phone line. GT Connect connects your team internally; outside calling is on the roadmap and needs a licensed provider.
  • Always-on ringing. A desk phone rings even when the computer is off. Browser apps need to be open.
  • Power cuts. Some desk phones keep working on backup power. Laptops and mobile phones usually do too, but a desktop computer will not.

A practical approach

Many small fleets will do best with both for a while: keep the existing line for customers, and move internal calls between dispatch, drivers and the office to GT Connect. When business numbers launch, you can decide whether to move customer calls too.
